LEAMINGTON SPA, UK – Two 17-year-old Afghan nationals, who entered the UK as asylum seekers after a period of study in India, have been sentenced for the brutal rape of a 15-year-old girl in a Warwickshire park.

The defendants, Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal, were born in Afghanistan and later studied in India before their arrival in Britain. On Friday, December 8, at Warwick Crown Court, they were handed significant prison terms for the attack that occurred on the evening of May 10 in Newbold Comyn park, Leamington.

The Attack and Investigation
The court heard that the victim became separated from her friends while out drinking. Jahanzeb approached and lured her away despite her protests, then called Niazal to join him. The case was secured through what the judge described as "compelling and chilling" evidence, including CCTV and footage recorded by the victim during the ordeal.

Sentencing and Aftermath
Judge Sylvia de Bertodano lifted reporting restrictions on the teenagers' identities, stating it was in the public interest. Jahanzeb was sentenced to 10 years and eight months in a young offenders' institution, while Niazal received nine years and ten months. Both must register as sex offenders for life.

In a powerful victim impact statement, the girl’s mother described her daughter’s shattered life. The once-vibrant teenager now suffers from severe anxiety and avoids leaving home.

Case Sparks Broader Debate
The sentencing has ignited discussion on social media and beyond, focusing on several points:

  • The defendants' background as Afghan asylum seekers who had studied in India.

  • Media reporting terminology, with some commentators criticizing early coverage that referred to the 17-year-old perpetrators as "boys" while the 15-year-old victim was termed a "woman."

  • Broader questions regarding the UK's asylum and safeguarding systems.

The case continues to develop as authorities and community groups process its implications.
