WASHINGTON, D.C. – Federal authorities have identified 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal as the primary suspect in the deadly mass shooting at a downtown Washington shopping center. The FBI confirmed his identity late Wednesday but declined to provide further details as investigators continue probing the incident, which left six people dead and twelve injured.

The attack has rattled the nation’s capital and prompted heightened security measures across key federal buildings. Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation and rely only on verified information.

Despite this, unverified claims are rapidly circulating on social media, alleging that Lakanwal may have ties to militant groups operating in Afghanistan, including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Some fringe online accounts have gone further, pushing baseless narratives suggesting foreign state involvement. No official agency has confirmed any such connection, and analysts warn these claims resemble coordinated disinformation attempts.

“It’s reckless and dangerous to assign blame based on a surname or regional origin,” said Dr. Alisha Reynolds, a senior analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “Such speculation inflames geopolitical tensions and distracts from real investigative work.”

The White House echoed similar sentiments, urging caution and patience as federal investigators gather evidence and interview witnesses. A classified briefing for members of the Senate Intelligence Committee has been scheduled as the situation develops.

Lakanwal, who reportedly entered the U.S. in 2021 and was granted asylum earlier this year, remains hospitalized under federal custody after being subdued at the scene.

This is a developing story, and more updates are expected as authorities continue their investigation.
